Here and Ever After is Karl's response to the post 9/11 paranoia he sees being reflected in both the media and American society as a whole, he thought for a long time about the subject and how to express his feelings on the matter. Eventually he decided Fern Capella's spoken word performance of the same name worked as an excellent backbone to flesh out his observations.
